It is no secret that children can get in trouble at school for many reasons. The return to in-person education last school year revealed many concerns with discipline and behaviors. Few know that children with eligible disabilities and special education rights are supposed to be disciplined with different considerations and procedures. The same is true for children in foster care who have experienced trauma—extra protections apply whether they have a disability or not. This CLE highlights discipline in the context of these two populations and provides insight into how advocates can seek just outcomes for their clients. It will explores discipline inequity and efforts to curb those outcomes through best practices and policies here in Clark County.
