In Abuse/Neglect Cases - Children's Attorneys Project

A 14-year-old girl and her two siblings came into care in November 13, 2021 after their parents were arrested and further investigation revealed that the family was homeless, there was an extensive history of domestic violence, untreated mental health concerns, and that the parents were abusing drugs, including heroin and meth. This case is specific to only the 14-year-old. When the kids first entered care, their foster parent reported they were constantly bickering, defiant, and aggressive among other behaviors. The 14-year-old disclosed sexual abuse by their father and subsequently engaged in cutting herself, but she has been addressing her trauma in therapy. They initially were having phone calls with their parents, but she did not want to participate and the parents have since disappeared and do not communicate with them nor with the case worker. She does not want to return to her parents or engage with them at this time. The permanency plan is guardianship to their maternal grandmother in Michigan. As a result, this teenage girl is in need of an attorney to represent her legal wishes and rights as to permanency, placement, visitation, and to ensure appropriate services are in place.  Next Hearing(s): Review Hearing on 11/10/22 at 3:00 pm in Courtroom 12.
