In Abuse/Neglect Cases - Children's Attorneys Project

A 12-year-old boy was physically abused by his father and came into DFS care in September 2021. He has four other siblings who have separate cases. The father coerced the other children to lie about the violence. In addition, there are allegations he sexually abused the two girls in the family as well and physical abuse of another one of the boys. The father was charged criminally with child abuse for his actions and the criminal trial is pending. This 12-year-old is set to be a witness at that criminal trial in April and needs to be prepared for the experience, although he already successfully testified for the pretrial hearing. The kids have been with their paternal grandmother and aunt since removal, and she has been in their lives trying to protect them for as long as they’ve been alive. She is committed to keeping them forever and is working to address their trauma through therapeutic services. This child recently got assigned a new therapist. This child does not want to be reunified with his father but may be willing to do therapeutic visits. As a result, she needs an attorney to represent her wishes and legal rights as to permanency, placement, and visitation and to ensure appropriate services are in place. Next hearing(s): Review on 9/20/22 at 3:00 pm in Courtroom 12; Criminal Trial on 9/26/22 at 9 am in Department 20.
