Pro Bono Volunteer of the Month-September 2020

Susan A. Maheu of Susan Maheu, Esq. Ltd.

Susan maintains a law practice and real estate brokerage.

Susan is a native Las Vegan, and upon obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration at UNLV in 1989, Susan “opened” the Mirage and MGM Grand hotels and casinos and the M&M’s World Store for Mars, Inc. as managers and director in merchandising operations and branding.  In 1998, Susan (fka Susan G. Trautmann) was accepted into the William S. Boyd School of Law at UNLV and graduated 2001, charter class — earning the CALI Excellence Award for Legal Writing and the Silver State Gaming Law Award.

First licensed in Arizona, Susan was Corporate Counsel for an Arizona public utility.  She then returned to Nevada as Assistant General Counsel for Nevada Power and Sierra Pacific Power d/b/a NV Energy.

Responding to the economic crisis of 2008, Susan was among the first Nevada Supreme Court-appointed mediators for the prevention of foreclosures upon Nevada homeowners.  It was through these mediations that Susan recognized the need to have affordable legal representation and opened her law firm in 2011.

In Susan’s words she is “grateful for the morally-rewarding opportunities with Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada” through accepting pro bono cases and volunteering for Ask-A-Lawyer.  When we asked Susan about a memorable pro bono case — she responded that it was a foreclosure prevention, wherein the homeowners were facing foreclosure during a dire medical crisis.  The mediation process and subsequent negotiations afforded the family to remain in their home.

For her commitment to pro bono, we honor Susan Maheu as our September Volunteer of the Month.
