A newborn baby boy, was taken into protective custody by DFS after he and his mother both tested positive for methadone at the time of his birth. The mother’s doctor confirmed that the mother was receiving methadone as treatment for heroin/methamphetamine addiction. In April 2018, the mother relinquished her parental rights to this child’s older sister; in that case, she failed to address substance abuse and domestic violence concerns. In addition to the older sister in the prior case, the mother has lost her rights to four other children. Despite this history, the mother and father expressed to the court their plan to get this child back in their care, and paternal relatives noted the parents’ progress. This child needs an attorney to represent his legal rights and wishes as to placement, permanency, visitation and to ensure appropriate services are in place. There is an Adjudicatory Hearing set for March 22, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. in Courtroom 22.
