A 2 month old baby boy came into DFS care in November 2018, when he was born substance exposed. He was exposed in-utero to illicit substances. Because of complications at birth, he could not be tested, so it is unclear what the exposure was like. His condition at the time of birth was critical; medical professionals were not expecting him to live. After a month, his condition had improved enough for DFS to become involved formally. He was eventually released to his grandmother, who also has his sister. At last report, he has gained weight (2 lbs) and is doing well with grandma. Although he still requires Oxygen 24/7 and has a team of doctors that he sees to manage his conditions, he has made huge strides from the initial report. His mother has already lost custody of his older half-sister. His mother is incarcerated in another county, and his father is choosing, at least for now, not to engage. An attorney is needed to represent the child’s legal rights and wishes regarding permanency, placement, visitation, and to ensure the appropriate services are in place. There is a Review Hearing on May 15, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. in Courtroom 22.
